The Gold Medal is awarded to a member as an acknowledgement of their contributions to oncology and their service to the American Radium Society (ARS).

The recipient’s professional contributions may be in teaching, basic research, clinical investigation or professional statesmanship, and must include outstanding efforts in service to the ARS. The recipient may be drawn from any of the disciplines reflected in the membership of the ARS.

The ARS is pleased to present the 2020 Gold Medal award to Jay S. Cooper, MD.

"Though Jay Cooper's position in baseball was reportedly second base, writing a letter for Dr. Jay Scott Cooper to be a recipient of our Gold Medal is like asking a baseball writer to write a letter supporting Derek Jeter's induction into the Hall of Fame. Like the baseball writers association, our selectors are people in the know, and they already know.

Dr. Cooper has done amazing things for our society, our specialty and our world. If I can start with Head and Neck radiation oncology, his papers and his work define the present standard of care. His postoperative radiation vs. radiation+ chemo paper is required reading decades after it was written. Dr. Cooper was instrumental in designing 90-03, the largest Head & Neck trial on fractionation ever performed. Dr. Cooper is a true scientist and rejects the tendency of our peers to jump on a bandwagon without rigorous supporting evidence.

Within the American Radium Society, Dr. Cooper has done every job within the Society and some more than once. He and his wonderful wife Liz have set the record for a number of meetings attended and the only times he seems to miss meetings are when his wonderful daughter, Arielle decides to give birth during our annual meetings. Michael, his son, and another gifted attorney seems to more thoughtful about when to provide the Coopers with more grandchildren.

Dr. Cooper has been recognized by ASTRO, American College of Radiology, Radiology, American College of Radiation Oncology and numerous Head & Neck Societies. On a personal level, Dr. Cooper has mentored dozens of people within our society, myself included and his generous nature is an example for us all."
